Hi, I'm Margie Newman. I blog about public relations, social media, careers, productivity and geek stuff.

Deadline stress sucks

(sigh)

It has been such a long week and I am told it is only Tuesday. The good news here is that I am about to release my double deadline week stress at the gym – and since you asked, you should, too. (oh, you didn’t ask? sorry.)

Now, I’m not saying we all need to become body builders, I am only suggesting that you have some sort of stress release in your life and that this is a good one.

Exercising will, in fact, give you more energy to tackle those deadlines, all the while making you healthy. (and healthy keeps your booty from showing up in movies like Supersize Me.)

And remember, a healthy you also means less money wasted spent on doctors, medicine, Kleenex, and chic flicks. Finally, a healthy you also leads to increased productivity, so you can spend more time doing things like eating dark chocolate (because it is good for your skin) and watching American Idol.

Lifehacker says …

wikilaw.png“Wikilaw is a new legal wiki looking to do for law what Wikipedia does for information.

Wikilaw is still very new, so the content is still limited. However, in time this could prove to be a great place to check out when you???re looking for some legal instruction or understanding.”

And if Lifehacker says it, chances are it is pretty cool.

Communications breakdowns

They suck.

Save your money

We see you out there.

You folks chasing your dreams and whatnot … and although we are quite proud of you, we really must nag about just one little thing:

For the love of pete, please open a savings account.

FlackRabbit recently began saving with ingdirect and we find it quite user-friendly and almost downright fun.

Do a little research and find the savings plan that is right for you … as long as you do it, we are happy campers.

(sigh) There.

We feel much better now.

Ta da! Life is now so simple.

FlackRabbit is a big fan of things that make life easier while encouraging us to be productive.

Wanna see one?

Check out this totally internet based to-do list and project management program. More than just a check list, this program allows you to share project files, edits, and calendars with your entire team.

It even gives you the option of letting your clients see bits of your progress – if you want them to, that is. ;)

You gotta have heart*

“If we did all the things we are capable of doing we would astound ourselves.”
                 – Edison

My momma always says, “No matter what your level of talent, there will always be someone better than you and someone worse, so stop comparing yourself to everybody and get to it.”

I think that statement is important for folks starting a new business to keep in mind, especially when you are fully aware of (and a little freaked out by) the talented competition out there.

Yes, there are people out there who make a living out of doing what you would give your Mac to do. And yes, they have been at it for 400 years and have become a household name in your field, but remember – you must forget all that.

What it really comes down to is this: How badly do you want it?

How much enthusiasm, heart, and sweat are you willing to put into it?

Are you ready for the failures/rejections you WILL endure before you find your footing?

If your answers to those questions begin with “YES!” then you are light-years ahead of even the most talent folks out there who will surely fail simply because they can’t manage to shake their own self-doubt.

So, stop comparing yourself to the competition and get to it. Be sure your every move communicates your confidence.

Most of all ??? don???t be afraid to let your friends be your cheerleaders. Lord knows if you do something we think is weird we are going to tell you. Better us than a potential client. ;)

An observation

PR flacks will be told a lot more about “the dark side” from reporters two states away than our reporters down the street are willing/able to tell us.

Thank goodness for Southwest Airlines.

Happy actors

mask.jpgCheck out this week’s Nashville Scene and read up on our favorite masked theatre troop, John Holleman and Company!

Oh, and don’t forget to go see their performance of Metamorphoses at Nashville’s Parthenon Feb 17 -19 and 24 -26.

Let’s get together, yea, yea, yea*

Ah, yes. Let’s schedule a meeting.

You know, that one hour block of time we will all lovingly carve out in our day, which despite our best intentions WILL turn into a hairy, two and a half hour beast of random conversations and little to no actual productivity.

While we at FlackRabbit cannot completely solve the mystery of the chia-meeting – we are certainly happy to direct you to a fabulous blog that we feel has a great way of explaining things, in hopes that what they have to say might help you make those meetings more productive and positive for you and your team.

Basically, these folks at 37 Signals believe meetings are evil, but if you are going to have them:

Keep your meetings to one hour, make your agendas specific, solve an actual problem or two, make a plan for solving new problems, assign tasks, and then get the heck out of there.

To this we say, “Amen, brother.”

Sweet dreams

britt.pngIt is amazing how many folks I am running into lately from college and high school. We go through the usual motions of current marital status, location and career – and then almost every one of them mentions how they really want to own their own X, or sell their own Y … they are just waiting for the right time, the right loan, or the right contact.

Just dreaming about it with an old friend makes them tear up. Can you imagine how excited they will be when they actually open that store, sell that painting, or start that charity?

While most of these folks are still putting together their plans, others have already started and are doing quite well, so today we are gonna give you a little inspiration at www.brittneycate.com. Fabulous product, great website and the cutest Auburn alum you ever saw. (Christy B. gave me your site info, Brittney - I am so excited for you!)

Take a look at Brittney’s site and see if it doesn’t inspire you to take your passion and make a living out of it.

Are you ready? We can’t wait to introduce you to the rest of the world ;)
