Don’t have blog? Publish your thoughts on FlackRabbit.
I’d like to offer up FlackRabbit as platform for those of you without blogs to publish your public relations and communications expertise. You’re incredibly smart and I’d love to see your thoughts in pixels; why not do it here?
I often harp on PR folks for not blogging. It’s hard for me to understand why one would not want the writing practice and a published account of their knowledge.
It’s a lot of work though. A blog is like a dog. If you don’t feed, water and bathe it, and take it for frequent walks, it will die. Some folks would rather not bother with the maintenance; maybe you’re more of a cat person. In any case, I urge you to seek out the opportunity to pen a guest post for a relevant industry blog–be it on FlackRabbit or somewhere else. You’ll get all the benefits of a published piece, without the actual blogging part.
How do you get started? Think of it as a pitch for a client.
- Take the time to get to know a blogger in your industry. This is best done by commenting on his blog or sharing links to his posts. Bloggers love that sort of thing. Be sure you have a good understanding of what his audience is, what his obsession is, and his blogging style.
- Then, figure out a timely topic you could craft 250-400 words about. It should fall in line with what you know about his audience and subject matter.
- Next, send an email to the blogger. The tone must assure him that you’ll carry your own water. For example, provide your own deadline, specify a word count, tease the headline and include a sample of the lead. The same approach applies when you’ve been asked to provide a guest post; take the lead on setting ground rules (such as, how long you have to wait before posting it on your own blog or Facebook page).
- Finally, don’t blow the deadline. If you’ve told someone you’ll provide them with content, follow through.
If you’d like to pen a guest post here, please email me (Margie at FlackRabbit dot com) and let me know what you’d like to blog about. And you know, do all that stuff I just outlined above.
I’m interested in thoughtful posts about all things public relations, in-house communications, your experience working a PR firm, social media, the current state of journalism, and how you use technology to make you the smartest person in the room. Posts should be about 350 words; please include a short bio, too.
