I really can’t imagine anything worse than syncing your Twitter account with your LinkedIn profile. The thought of someone’s drunken Tweets perched just inches above their virtual resume simply makes me want to cry.

But there is something to be said for showing future employers and peers that you possess a working knowledge of social and new media, so having a visible link to your Twitter account makes good sense. I just don’t want it streaming my Tweets, even if they are industry-related. Fortunately–thanks to Twitter hashtag magic–we can have our cake and LinkedIn, too:

When you allow LinkedIn access to your Twitter account, “Twitter Settings” will give you the option to “share all tweets” or “share only tweets that contain #in.” I chose the latter.

On Twitter, that pound sign is referred to as a hashtag. Folks use it as a sort of Twitter index, making it easier to search for and follow a conversation. In this case, it also gives you control of which Tweets post to LinkedIn.

For example, your Tweet, “Reading about LinkedIn on FlackRabbit.com” would not show up on your LinkedIn profile, but “Reading about LinkedIn on FlackRabbit.com #in” would.

As a fan of the empowering Facebook application called “selective Twitter,” I’m happy to see LinkedIn providing an intuitive way for us to control the Tweets of our lives.
