Hi, I'm Margie Newman. I blog about public relations, social media, careers, productivity and geek stuff.

SXSW Interactive: Day 1

Check us out! We had a blast on day 1 and never even had to wait in a line for four hours like these poor folks:

Team Newman browsed the Austin Convention Center, picked up our tote bags o’ goodness, attended a session and even got a little work done on the side. We also chilled with Scott, Dave and Michelle.

The weather here is nasty, rainy and freakin’ cold. BUT that didn’t stop us from learning new stuff, making friends with strangers and drinking free beer.

Oh! And we got to meet Chris Brogan, who is, in the geek world, kind of a big deal. Brogan was wearing one of those Poken things that I had previously told Ashley I thought would fail because dudes (who typically serve as geek trend-setters) would not wear them. Guess I called that one wrong. Anyway, Chris Brogran wears a Poken AND claims to sport furry underwear. Just thought I’d share.

In other news, we miss Joe Flood and really, really wish he was here to people watch with us.

Tomorrow, we attend lots o’ sessions and count the number of Manhattan Portage bags and Jesus beards we see. Fun!

In the meantime, we sleep! Sure, it’s early. But after you’ve had been and a cheese burger like this you really do need a good nap.

Favorite Twitter app of the moment: TwitterSheep

Twittersheep for MargieNewman File this one under I’m not sure why I love this so much, but I do – it’s TwitterSheep! A new-ish Twitter application that analyzes the bios of from your Twitter followers and sort of plops out the common denominators in a fun little graphic. Mine is pictured over there.

You’ll notice my flock is filled with fabulous pr and social media types. I really dig how “geek” rounds out the bottom there.

The best part is that TwitterSheep doesn’t ask for your password. You know how I feel about all these apps that want your password …they’re evil.

So, I’ve shared the scoop on my flock - what does yours look like? See! Isn’t this oddly fun!?

Oh! And if we aren’t following each other on Twitter, we should! Here’s my little piece of the Twitter pie.

Questions from the interwebs: “what is this Chic Geek thing?”

I’m routinely asked what the heck Chic Geek is and what it has to do with FlackRabbit. And well, nothing, really. It’s actually a separate technology and productivity writing gig for Her Nashville magazine. It’s a true honor to be a contributor – it is also the fulfillment of a New Year’s resolution!

I link to the Chic Geek blog posts on my homepage and usually link to the online version of my monthly column as soon as it’s posted.  I don’t pull a feed of those print columns on my site, but here are the links to a couple of my favorites: Read More…

Welcome, nerd speak seeker!

Well, of course you found us! You Googled the super secret FlackRabbit code words:

And there’s the pitch

It took me a few minutes to figure out what was happening, but all signs point to this:

I just received my first product pitch from a PR flack.

Not for this blog of course, but for my Her Nashville Chic Geek column. Now that I’m on the receiving end of the PR effort I realize just how natural it is to pick these things apart like so many folks do.

Here’s what I learned and appreciate upon first reading:

  1. The pitchess has read at least one of my columns and/or has an understanding of my passion (tech and productivity for busy women)
  2. She did my homework for me and listed the ways her tech product helps busy moms be more productive
  3. She gets that geeky folk like to play with geeky things and has offered to let me put my itty bitty hands on a tester

Because the PR pro communicated these things, I will be emailing her back and asking some questions. Honestly, I’m curious because her device, though intriguing, has received less than glowing reviews. (Well, that and I’m a HUGE fan of the competitor’s product)

I also want to know how she found Her Nashville; she’s not from around here so how did my local column get on her radar?

As a PR pro, have you been on the receiving end of a pitch? Did you pick it apart? Were you impressed?
