Hi, I'm Margie Newman. I blog about public relations, social media, careers, productivity and geek stuff.

Because Twitter tells me so

Ah, Twitter. I don’t know if it has jumped the shark, or become legit. Either way, when I witnessed its launch in March 2006, I never imagined that chatter on this texting platform would one day be – among other things - used as a source for Governor Schwarzenegger’s spokesperson when being interviewed for a CNN story:

The legislation has been divisive, with the governor’s office receiving more than 100,000 phone calls and e-mails, most of them in opposition, spokeswoman Andrea McCarthy said last month.

But she added that most of the Twitter posts the governor received were in favor of the bill.

Do you think Twitter feedback counts as a legitimate talking point? Would you use it in the way this spokesperson has?

Reason #457 why you need an iPhone: granny texts

It’s not the touchscreen that excites me. Not the custom apps and intuitive navigation that thrills and delights me – oh, no. It’s my photo emailing, instant communicating, iPhone wielding Granny.

She’s always been a cell phone gal (and an Apple product gal, for that matter), but the iPhone really has hit home with her. Now, I can say things like “Hi Granny!,” “I love you” or “When do you turn 75?” any time day or night and receive a hilarious message back within minutes. Because she literally wears the phone around her neck. Seriously. In a pouch thing.

This weekend I needed to know, very quickly, what size jacket my grampa wears. I texted the question. The answer, not 30 seconds later: XL. The result, grampa gets a Northface jacket. Everyone’s happy.

Today, she texts me that hubby’s Christmas gift came in. (Hey Dave, your gift is in!). Oh, AND she loves me.

Sure, you can text from any phone. But the iPhone is freakishly easy to navigate, the buttons are big AND you can play bingo on it. It’s an senior geek’s dream, which is why she enjoys it so.

So thanks, Steve Jobs. I’m totally loving my Texting Granny 2000. The ability to constantly communicate with my Granny is just too cool for words.
