Hi, I'm Margie Newman. I blog about public relations, social media, careers, productivity and geek stuff.

Guinea Pig Weekend

This weekend, I practiced what I preach and spent a good bit of time just testing out/messing with online/social platforms. Some of my weekend Web adventures went well, one didn’t. Here’s a recap:

Success

About.Me–it’s still in private beta mode, but this “personal splash page” (pictured right) could be a fun virtual business card. I set up my page in about five minutes; navigation and editing is intuitive and smart. The best part: beginner-geek analytics are built-in, as are easy promo options thru Twitter, Facebook and embed links. Not sure how to best “use” it yet, but am glad I have claimed my name!

Skype–yes, I am officially the last person on the planet to sign up for Skype. Now that I’ve experienced it, I’m not sure how I have lived without it. I particularly love the “share my screen” option that allows you to show your desktop documents with an online collaborator. It’s brilliant I tell you.

Tumblr–given my obsession with WordPress, I rarely venture out and explore other blog platforms, so thought I’d give tumblr a whirl. I like it and recommend it for those of you who want to start a blog, but aren’t all that sure if you want to journal, share links, post photos, blast videos, etc. Tumblr provides a relatively user-friendly way to do all of that. The last thing I need is another blog, but I did consider (for about five minutes) making my Tumbler a personal blog. Nah. Read More…

Joe Flood: Make your blog look good on the iPhone

{Looks like several of you are taking me up on the offer to have your communications, PR and geek thoughts featured on FlackRabbit. Yay! Our first guest post is a quick WordPress/iPhone tutorial by the fabulous Joe Flood of Washington, D.C.}

Now that I’m sure you have your own WordPress blog, thanks to Margie, let’s make it look good on an iPhone. You don’t want people to have to zoom in or squint to look at your web pages in the iPhone’s tiny browser. Instead, you want something that looks formatted for the ubiquitous Apple product. You should be using WordPress

WordPress Pumpkin

After my most recent nagging about how you should be blogging, a few folks have asked what platform I recommend.

For those of you wanting to start a blog quickly, cheaply and on completely on your own, hop over to WordPress.com or Blogger. Sign up, find an available name, choose a theme and get crankin’. I think WordPress.com is better, but there are many who would disagree. They would be wrong. You’ll then have something like www.blogname.wordpress.com or www.blogname.blogspot.com, which is what I use for my Picalicious blog.

If you have a domain name (FlackRabbit.com, etc.) and want it turned into a blog, I recommend self hosted WordPress. I’ve used self hosted WordPress since 2006. FlackRabbit has known three different looks during this time. The most recent was unveiled a few weeks ago when hubby installed a new theme for me. Read More…

Start building your brand

Over the years, this website has been home to my rants and raves about PR, communications, social media, geek stuff and productivity.  I’m grateful; this virtual garden o’mine has played an important role in the creation and maintenance of my personal brand.

People complement FlackRabbit.com quite a bit. Thanks, folks! Don’t be fooled, I didn’t design it! I’m lucky to be married to a talented web dude who created my logo and website long, long ago.

Of course, I realize that not everyone is married to a web designer. Still, you can do a lot to shore up your personal brand even without the customized creative: Read More…

Hooray! WordPress loves me again.

So, this morning I was a little mad at WordPress, the platform upon which Flackrabbit is built. I felt betrayed:

“WordPress, I’m confused,” my draft post from 9 a.m. read. “You love on everyone else but me. Lately, you’ve been sort of, well, difficult to deal with. I find myself turning to Twitter and even Picalicious to share good, cool or odd news. It’s just easier than watching you take away my editing tools, or fighting with you over HTML tags. (sigh).”

I was quite down. But then! Then! I logged in just now and found that hubs had magically found a cure for what ailed WordPress. All is right with the World Wide Web again. Thanks, GroovySoup!

Her Nashville March Issue: Girl, you need a blog

I fully realize that when you read that headline you IMMEDIATELY thought, “Oh sure, Margie, I’ll get right on that blog thing in my spare time.” Here’s the deal – I’m not telling you to start blogging because I think you are bored. I’m suggesting it because of its social, emotional and educational value. Plus, blogging is a skill you can add to your resume. Bonus!

Before you roll your eyes and mutter about what a nerd I am (A.T.) just read my argument. THEN you are free to roll your eyes:

Goodbye, Picalicious. Hello, Vidalicious!

Vidaclious - a video a day for one year with The FlipI still can’t believe I made it an entire year with my picture-a-day experiment, Picalicious. You can read more about that here. Oddly enough, I’m pretty sad it’s over. But it’s okay because Dave is always thinking ahead. Not only did he buy me The Flip for Christmas,  he also surprised me with a new website…

Introducing VIDALICIO.US, a video a week for a year. OMG! I know!

So, if you liked Picalicious in all it’s fabulous photo and witty headline wonder – you’ll ADORE Vidalicious. Each week you’ll get to see THRILLING video such as my dog eating, my hubby painting, cookies baking and even me running down a hallway. And it’s not even January 1 yet!

Some details: I’ll be using The Flip for all of my videos, which are usually 10 – 25 seconds in length. I’ll post them to YouTube and then upload them to the site. At least one video a week, but I’m sure there will be more. Wish me luck! Not sure what the heck I’ll do for 2010; thankfully, I’ve Dave’s got a 365 days to figure that one out.

Oh! And it’s not a .com. It’s www.vidalicio.us.

I know, it’s very fancy. (Squeal!)
